“Alien Covenant Origins” takes place in the time before the launch of the Covenant colonization mission on an Earth that is an environmental garbage can. So much of the globe is polluted and the number of desperate people is at unprecedented levels. Even if you compare to the times before machines, before The Industrial Revolution in Europe, society on Earth is collapsing. The Weyland-Yutani company has invested a lot of resources and prestige toward this colonization mission and is not about to set it aside or delay it and therein lies the premise of this story because there are those that would stop the mission.

The Covenant is headed toward a planet called Origae-6 with two thousand colonists to a never before visited part of space. Captain Jacob Branson and his wife Daniels finish the last touches of preparations for the mission while the security chief Sergeant Daniel Lope finishes hiring the last members of his team. All seems well when terrorist attacks threaten to stop the mission in its track. Who is behind the attacks and for what reason? Well, the answer to that question is not obvious but rather strange.

The story of the novel feels short and I have to remind myself that this is only intended to be a foreshadowing of things to come. I felt like I, the reader, deserved more story. The story is pretty original and I loved it for that. ( I´m not gonna give away any spoilers.) This is the story of space exploration, a desperate human race, corporate politics and machinations, cults, prophets, psychics and, above all, impending doom. A doom we never see in the story but we, the reader, know is coming. We know the horrors to come and it´s the stuff of great storytelling.

I really enjoyed “Alien Covenant Origins” for what I see as originality in its story and the fact that it´s a good preparation for things to come in the Aliens Story. The character of Duncan Fields was a masterstroke in storytelling. His background was a good touch to his story too. It´s one of those instances where I shook my head at a Sergeant Lope who did not know what we, the reader, did. If Sergeant Lope only knew what the readers did.
