“Amadeus” is an American, drama, partially comical, partially historically accurate, biography film adaptation from the play of the same name written by Peter Shaffer. It was produced by Michael Hausman, Bertil Ohlsson and Saul Zaentz and was directed by Milos Forman. It is important to say that the play and screen play were written by Peter Shaffer with the uncredited writer Zdenek Mahler. It stars a huge cast which includes F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce, Elizabeth Berridge, Roy Dotrice, Simon Callow, Christine Ebersole, Jeffrey Jones, Charles Kay, Kenneth McMillan, Kenny Baker, Lisbeth Bartlett, Barbara Bryne and many others.
“Amadeus” is the well done biography of Wolgang Amadeus Mozart, played by Tom Hulce, during his life in Vienna, Austria in the 18th Century. The story focuses on an alleged rivalry between Mozart and the Italian Composer Antonio Salieri, played by F. Murray Abraham, who was the court composer for Emperor Joseph II, played by Jeffrey Jones. Mozart is somewhat of a wild child while Salieri sees himself as well behaved servant of God and Emperor. When the to meet they are almost destined to despise each other. Although Salieri is a much more hateful person with more influence in the court than Mozart.
The film is a glimpse at the politics, antics and whirlwind that surrounded the musical genius known as Mozart. It´s a funny at times, disturbing at times, look into the life of the eccentric Mozart. Watching Saleiri call Mozart a `creature´ is hilarious but how conniving he turns out to be is not so funny. There definitely is an element of tragedy, particularly toward the end, but it is on the whole a fun film to watch.
This is an old film but it´s definitely worth the watch. I highly recommend it.
