Anna
Released 2014
”Anna” is an American, French and Spanish sci-fi, thriller, mystery released in June 2014. It was directed by Jorge Dorado and screen written by Guy Holmes and Martha Holmes. It stars Mark Strong, Taissa Farmiga, Brian Cox, Saskia Reeves, Richard Dillane, Indira Varma, Noah Taylor, Julio Perillan, Rod Hallett, Clare Calbraith and Alberto Ammann. This film was also named “Mindscape”. It won an award at the Stitges Film Festival and was nominated for the Gaudy Awards, Goya Awards, Neox Fan Awards and Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. It won the Neox Fan Award for the best Spanish film of the year.
Mark Strong plays the character of John Washington who is a psychic detective investigating a young girl for murder. He does a brilliant job of portraying a damaged yet capable detective who is unsure of himself. He does a wonderful job of combining conflicting conditions in the character of John Washington. On the one hand you have the detective recovering from the physical damage of a stroke and the emotional damage of his wife´s suicide while on the other hand he is a very capable detective who must reach his previous level of excellence to solve this case. We, the audience see the mystery unraveling through his eyes and because he is an “unreliable witness” the difficulty of solving the case is compounded.
As in the case of most good thrillers things are not what they seem and the story goes in unpredictable directions. Several parts of the film have a dream like quality to them and we cannot help but feel for the main character as he struggles through the case. This is a low budget film with an excellent story that does not disappoint. I see this as the type of film that will have remakes done of it every 8 years or so. All the people that dwell on the flaws of this film should keep that in mind.
I recommend this film as a must see and own.
