”Automata” is a Spanish / American / Bulgarian, Sci fi, fantasy film released in October 2014. It was produced by Danny Lerner, Les Weldon, Antonio Banderas and Sandra Hermida and directed by Gabe Ibanez. The cast of very talented stars include Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith, Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster, Andy Nyman, Bashar Rahal, Andrew Tiernan, Birgitte Hjort SØrensen, Tim McInnerny and David Ryall. The film was written by Gabe Ibanez, Igor Legarreata and Javier Sanchez Donate. The music was written by Zacarias M. de la Riva.
The story takes place one to two generations in the future when solar flares have destroyed most of the Earth´s surface and forced humanity into a desperate situation. Humanity must rebuild and try to stop the progression of desertification in order to survive. To do this, humanity turns to robots and automatons.
Eventually, as is always the case in stories where intelligent robots or automata live side by side with people, the automata are regalated to the slave caste. Through hardship, work and self-upgrading they discover their potential and dream of a better future without persecution.
I really like this movie because it focused on the love between intelligent beings and less on the destruction of an enslaving enemy. It has a very good story with a more cheerful ending than classic films like “Blade Runner”. I also loved the idea that the downcasted group seemed better equipped to survive the hardships to come. So if people died out their non-genetic creations would probably live on. The automata would live on as humanity´s non-genetic offspring. This does not bother me because the automata have some of our best traits. They are capable of love.
