“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is the story of Aang, the Avatar, played by Zach Tyler Eisen, on his quest to bring balance to the world comprised of 4 kingdoms, The Water, Fire, Air, Earth kingdoms. Aang is what is called an ‘airbender’ which is someone who can manipulate all for elements and can communicate to the spirit world. The Fire Nation has brutally conquered most of the world and it is up to the last airbender, Aang, to det things right. Together with his friends and sky bison Appa, played by Dee Bradley Baker, he sets out on a quest to set things right.

This is the fantasy story of a group on a quest. They bump into each other, egos collide and misunderstandings happen but their is also friendships that develop and characters that grow and become better people. That is why the story structure works every time. We not only see it in the fantasy genre but in Westerns, scifi, fictional stories of all kinds. In my opinion, seeing characters develop while on a group quest are some of the best character developments in all of literature. And that’s what makes this mini series such a good watch.

The story is simple but it works. This is a hugely successful franchise for a good reason. It’s good. I was surprised at how much I liked. At first I thought it was a children’s show but soon realized it has mass appeal over all ages and genres. The story is so well written I want to call it a modern day fairy tale that avoids the stereotypes and cliches you expect it to have. I really enjoyed it.
