“Brooklyn” is a British, Irish, American drama film based on the Colm Toibin´s novel of the same name. It is a kind of coming of age tale with mature appeal and simple themes. It was produced by Amanda Posey, Finola Dwyer, Thorsten Schumacher and Beth Pattinson. It was directed by John Crowley and the screenplay was written by Nick Hornby, the author of “High Fidelity” and “About A Boy”. It stars Saoirse Ronan, Hugh Gormley, Brid Brennan, Maeve McGrath, Emma Lowe, Barbara Drennan, Fiona Glascott, Emory Cohen, Domhall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. It recieved Acclaim at The 2015 Sundance Film festival and was nominated for 3 Academy Awards.

“Brooklyn” takes place in the early 1950s in Brooklyn, New York and is the story of Eilis Lacey, played by Saoirse Ronan. Eilis moves to America in search of opportunity and a new life. She finds both and soon must decide between moving back to Ireland or living in America. She´s helped by her friends, co-workers, a priest and finds a nice boyfriend named Tony, played by Emory Cohen.

One really unpredictable and great part of the story is it´s simplicity. This isn´t the story of a naive immigrant coming to America and going through terrible hardships or being the victim of predation. It´s basically someone finding the American Dream and having to decide between the old country or the new, America. So many movies nowodays use shock and horror to keep the story going, but this doesn´t. It´s a believable story that most people can relate to and that´s what I really liked about it. The people that come into Eilis´s life are regular people and her new neighborhood in New York City is a vibrant, healthy one.

The characters in this film, although it´s from a different time and different neighborhood, are so familiar and likeable. I really enjoyed this film. I´m also glad it was not a horror story either. What a breath of fresh air. This story takes place in a New York City most can relate to. This movie is a real nugget worth seeing.
