“Carnival Row” is an American, fantasy, crime, mystery, drama, TV series based on a script by Travis Beacham called “A Killing At Carnival Row”. It was produced by Rene Echevarria,Travis Beacham, Marc Guggenheim,Jon Amiel, Orlando Bloom and Gideon Amir and directed by Thor Freudenthal, Anna Foerster,Andy Goddard and Jon Amiel. It stars a huge cast which includes Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, Simon McBurney,Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Andrew Gower, Karla Crome, Arty Froushan, Indira Varma, Jared Harris, Jamie Harris, Tracey Wilkinson, Alice Krige, Maeve Dermody, Anna Rust, Scott Reid, Waj Ali, Caroline Ford, Ariyon Bakare, Anthony Kaye, Mina Andala, Ian Hanmore, Christian Dunckley Clark, Gregory Gudgeon and many more.
“Carnival Row” takes place in a victorian era world of mythical creatures living side by side with people but kept seggregated from them. It is a fantasy world where fairies, pan like humans with ram horns and even centaurs are kept in squalor and degradation in human society. They are simply not wanted. If you throw in a war to the mix and you have a flood of unwanted refugees in human society. This is a story element that works well, partly because of its relevance today. Rycroft `Philo´Philostrate, played by Orlando Bloom, is a war veteran detective investigating a string of murders inthe city. An old flame from his past who is also a fairy named Vignette Stonemoss, played by Cara Delevingne, turns up to see him with a knife at his throat and tensions in the city seem about to explode.
“Carnival Row” is a strange combination of story elements and genre that work very well. I not only credit this to the excellent costumes, acting and sets but particularly the writing and character developments. This mythical place is a lot like our world with similar problems to ours. I loved the characters and I especially loved how the characters avoided, for the most part, the sexism in so many TV series nowadays. Philo is damaged but likable and capable and Vignette is desperate and capable with heaps of drive in her personality.
This series is surprisingly very well done and a joy to watch. I highly recommend it.
