Maya Angelou was an American author, poet, essayist, dancer, singer, performer, fry cook, journalist and freedom activist born Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4th 1928 and died May 28 2014. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri the second child of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter Johnson.
She wrote 7 autobiographies the first of which was ”I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”. She received over 30 honorary doctorates and just as many awards. She was once a journalist in Egypt a night club dancer and a cast member on ”Porgy and Bess”.
I really think that the people who share their struggles with us are courageous and very often do it through the arts. They teach us about ourselves and the truths that need to be confronted in ourselves and society. Some of those truths are ugly. Such people are a treasure to us all and Maya Angelou was such a person.
