“Passengers” is a n American, action, drama, sci-fi thriller directed by Mortem Tyldem and produced by Neal H. Moritz, Stephen Hamel, Michael Maher, Greg Basser, Bruce Berman, Ben Browning, David B. Householter and Ori Marmur. It was written by the famous screenwriter and author Jon Spaihts (whose credits include Prometheus, Doctor Strange, which he co-wrote with other greats). It stars a great cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Laurence Fishburne, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, Andy Garcia, Jon Spaights, Vince Foster, Kara Flowers, Conor Brophy, Julee Cerda, Aurora Perrineau, Lauren Farmer, Emerald Mayne, Kristin Brock, Tom Ferrari, Quansae Rutledge, Emma Clarke, Jesus Mendoza, Apha Takahashi, Inder Kumar, Travis Thompson, Ana Gray, Kevin Tan and Ivana Vitomir among others. This film is just good sci-fi.

“Passengers” is the story of a dying overcrowding Earth sending a group of 5000 people to a new world they call Homestead II, someplace past Arcturus. Whatever happened to Homestead I is never mentioned but it can be inferred that several of these ships are going out all over the galaxy to increase humanity´s chances of survival. The ship is called the Avalon and all its crew are kept in suspended animation for the 120 year journey. Everything on the ship is programed ahead of time so when a meteor smashes into the ship and punctures many vital systems the very mission and the lives of everyone on board is in danger. As the story progresses more systems in the ship fail and it´s up to the only three people awake to fix things. So the lives of the 5000 passengers and the fancy and expensive piece of technology that is the Avalon is in the hands of the talented mechanical engineer Jim Preston, played by Chris Pratt, journalist and writer Aurora Lane, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and the Chief Deck Officer named Gus, played by Laurence Fishburne.

This is a beautiful film that harkens back to the Adam and Eve archetype where a man and a woman are alone in an evironment that takes care of all their physical needs. It´s a love story where both lovers are looking for a better world and find each other. I don´t typically gravitate toward love stories but this one works and because of the well rounded nature of the story I´d call it more a sci-fi thriller. The characters are likeable, talented people and the worldbuilding that is the Avalon is beautiful. It´s not so hard to believe that a polluted Earth with a collapsing economy would send out large ships to colonize other planets. In fact we might even see such projects in our lifetimes.

“Passengers” is a good film with a good story, action and likable characters. Go check it out.
