Predestination
released 2014
”Predestination” is an Australian, mystery, sci-fi, drama based on the Robert Heinlein short story called “All You Zombies”. It was directed by Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig and produced by Paddy McDonald, Tim McGahan, Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig. It was written and the music composed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig. The very talented actors include Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and Noah Taylor. This movie is a gem worth seeing.
The story begins with a temporal FBI agent who is trying to stop a criminal called the “Fizzle Bomber” from blowing up a section of a city. The agent has been following this criminal for years through different time periods. As the story unfolds we learn more about the FBI agent and the criminal he is tracking. All the characters in the film are linked in the most unusual way. That is why I consider this movie a mystery film also. The story takes the strangest twist to an unpredictable ending that you might have to watch over just to understand what this film is about. The story explores the usual themes of love, self-discovery and purpose in life through a carefully crafted mystery that unravels to a shocking conclusion. I don´t want to give any spoilers but suffice it to say that the ending is strange and unexpected.
At the end of this film I was left with the questions of what would I have done in the characters place? In life we chase things like love, careers, money and friendships, but what if that wasn´t the case? What if we were not part of the human race? What was the motivation guiding the characters to do what they did? All of these questions and more are what I asked myself after watching this film.
I also highly recommend reading some of Robert Heinlein´s books. He really is a great science fiction writer. I need also to mention the fact that Michael and Peter Spierig successfully poured so much of their talent into this film and deserve some serious credits. “Predestination” is a must see and own
