What is the purpose and impact of Entertainment, Art and all other forms of expression by people for people? Now that may be a broad question for the philosophers, great and not so great thinkers, sociologists and even archeologists. Yes, archeologists because so much art from previous societies, civilizations and tribes have been left behind for us to find and decipher.
Now here’s another question. To what extent can art be faked? I don’t mean replicated, forged or the like. I mean faked. Let me explain. How many times have you heard of supposed found artifact or document being fraudulent, created in a forgers home or lab? How many times has a document or art turned up with a backstory only to find that not only was the document or artifact a fake but the backstory as well? I think that we are living in a time of unprecedented amounts of fake, fraudulent backgrounds, backstories and such. The best example of this is the content creators of today. Many of them achieve a kind of shallow fame from a random act that catches people’s attention, like a barking cat or a talking snowman. They try to build on that random act with successive, staged content and hope to get fame and fortune. So that is why we have so many shaky images of videos and quick cut editing in videos.
Out of this murky world of shallow, disposable content (that is too often recycled, rehashed and borrowed from greats of the past) is the emergence of computer, algorithmic content. That is to say, content created by algorithms with very little, if any, human input. Books, videos and digital content in general can now, mostly, be created by computers. The dialogue, writing, music, videos, art etc. can now be done entirely by computers now. So, where does that leave the warm body in the creative process? A more important question would be to ask what purpose does this content have?
Does the purpose of created content be to make money and social engineer society in a specific direction? With the heavier use of computers in the creation process people will become more obsolete. There is another purpose for art and the creation of content. An important need in society is that of an individual’s self expression and his/her right to it and also the right to enjoy it as a person. The right to start and be a part of artistic movements, revolutions in thinking are crucial to healthy societies. We should not throw that away.
The worst part of technology in art and the content creation world is when there is fraud or when it is used to force censorship on individuals who are causing no harm. The use of robotic bands to create advertizing engines for companies is fraudulent. Companies have a right to advertize and they even have a right to find creative ways of advertizing. The best example of fraudulent activity in the content creation space is the Robotic Band. So, what is a robotic band?
Firstly, there is not only the Robotic Band. There is the Robotic Business, the Robotic Artist, the Robotic Anything really because this model can be used for anyway artistic form or creative form of expression.
There is one band in particular that I am thinking of but whose name I will not mention. This band is not really a band. They have generated a fake career, with fake followers (bought followers), fake likes (bought likes), fake content that is highly doctored. They have no real concerts or shows or even songs. In spite of all this fraud they are tolerated by all the big platforms because they advertize for various products in their videos. They are purely the image of a band and not a working, producing entity. Fans are supporting an image and not a real product. This is the worst of what the modern age has to offer. It is fraud and should not be tolerated by any of the digital platforms or companies, but it is and that’s a problem.
It is important we allow creativity, people’s involvement and checks and balances in the creative process to really enjoy this emerging technology.
