The way I see it the SCP Foundation is a different of telling stories, more precisely of the sci-fi and horror genre of stories. The stories are narrated by the same voice and and come from the files of a strange foundation, called the SCP Foundation, who seeks out strange artifacts with some having the potential to annihilate anything from a person to the human species and even all of reality and everything in between. They are an international (or more precisely omni national), private, scientific research organization that answers to no government or company no matter how large, and they deal with mostly the paranormal and supernatural spectrum of our reality and all threats that may come. And of course, in order for all this to work they work and exist under the highest secrecy. They are a private scientific research group with their own small army and technology that is hard to conceive the existence of. Besides the scientific research of the anomalous, they also go around the world, and sometimes in other dimensions, looking for and confiscating the strange items they find. Some are harmless and some are incredibly dangerous on the level of reality extinction. This makes for stories that are strange and horrific as some of the people die in horrible ways while trying to fulfill their duties. These stories really remind of the works of H. P. Lovecraft ramped up many notches. One good example is the story I listened to on Youtube below:
Youtube SCP Page: Exploring the SCP Foundation: SCP-4661 – Sin City
The SCP Foundation file 4661 – Sin City is an anomaly that takes place in a part of Las Vegas where the HUM level have dropped and strange goings on happen. The HUM Level is the measure of reality so when it drops the reality that we know becomes the strange, nonsensical, grotesque or even horrific. In this story a part of Las Vegas has merged with the 4th level of hell with inhabitants that look like pale people with horns appearing. It would seem that this area of Las Vegas is sliding into the 4th level of hell, not such a big surprise. People are becoming more and more demonic indulging in hedonistic activities and belligerent behavior. The SCP fight the situation with massive amounts of holy water even using all the water from the Hoover Dam to do so after converting it to holy water. As the story progresses the listeners and readers get an explanation for the state of Las Vegas as well as a game of blackjack with a demon called Pluto for Las Vegas to be left alone. The ending is great too.
One thing you can count on when listening to or reading files from the SCP Foundation is the presence of the strange. All the stories/ files are unexpected things drawn from the wild and gothic imaginations of its writers. Good job. Some are benign objects with useless powers other files, like the one above, describe entire areas, cities, landscapes of the strange. The imagination is a really fantastic part of these stories and I don’t think there is anything like it anywhere.
Another great idea is the use of a narrator who reads a file to us as a story element. This story telling idea sounds like it would never work. At first glance it sounds like what we call in writing a data dump and a terrible experience for the listener or reader but that is not the case at all. These stories are not data dumps where the writer tells the reader what is going on instead of showing them. That is not what is happening at all. The imaginations in these stories are a real treat.
So, check out tales from the SCP Foundation. These are some great stories.
