“See” is the story of a society that has gone blind. Not in the metaphorical sense but quite, literally blind. The people in this not-too-distant future cannot see. They have developed an entire, functioning society that compensates very well for their handicap and I find that truly fascinating. Stories nowadays need to explore characters and societies that deal with handicaps of all kinds, be they physical, intellectual or even emotional. Yes emotional handicaps. That story element alone is what drew me in to watch it, that and the “Aquaman” star himself Jason Mamoa. I loved the way they used strings to communicate the way we use pen and paper or keyboard and screen. It did bother me a little to see the characters always so close to the ground and not stand up straight but such is their reality.
Metaphorically it´s a human race going through what future historians might call `Dark Ages´. It´s a society in need of a type of renaissance where they get some kind of sight back or better yet develop into people that no longer need their sight. Now there´s an interesting twist of the imagination. How many people can come up with such a society from their imagination? Such a story would be a breath of fresh air in our sight-centric world where sight is so important and most of us cannot imagine another society developing and thriving without sight.
This future humanity has a lot of the same problems we do today. They feud and wage war and even commit cruelties against each other but, contrary to most other bloggers, I would not call this world, this future, dystopian. Sure, the people of this world deal with many problems, many of which were brought on by themselves but such problems have always plagued our societies. I would not call this future dystopian any more than I would call the Dark Ages of Europe dystopian. This is the story of a humanity, or at least a part of humanity, that is struggling to survive in a world where they have been dealt a disadvantge. This is a world facing a kind of reset, very much like Western Europe did in its Dark Ages.
Check out “See” folks because its a breath of fresh air in storytelling and a project that has attracted so much talent.
