”Sharp” is the second sci-fi book of the series written by Alex Hughes about the adventures of the telepath Adam. The first book was called ”Clean”. In this book the consultant detective is investigating the murder of someone from his past. Someone that he needed to make amends with but never got the chance.

The telepathic consultant detective returns to solve the murder of a person from his past named Emily Hamilton. Emily Hamilton is one of the three people whose life he destroyed while he was their professor because he was high on the drug Satin. He never got to make amends to her and feels guilty about it. He also suffered psychic damage from his previous case and struggles with the healing process while trying to do his job and faces the possibility of being laid off around Christmas time. All of these issues make Adam realize that he has to make serious changes in his life. He also makes a deal with the guild to save his friend Swartz´s life and helps to evaluate Isabella Cherabino´s nephew psychic ability level.

One of the things I liked about this book is its readability. Not only is it a fast read and convenient for airport or train station waits, it has a main character that is likeable and interesting. The character develops in leaps and bounds in this second book and may very well be on the road to recognition among his peers as the brilliant and talented detective that he is.

In a dream he sees where he is headed and that terrifies him. He does not want to end up dying a destitute drug addict and begins to take action to change the direction of his life. It´s this change that makes the character so interesting because he is rebelling against his situation in a positive way. Keep in mind that in spite of his mistakes and problems Adam is a highly moral person.

The description of mindspace is brilliant. It´s like a world on top of reality with a gaseous, fleeting quality. Emotions and bits of reality seem to linger in mindspace and I found that just brilliant. I wish upcoming stories of Adam will provide us with more access to this world because it is another aspect of world-building the author has done a fantastic job with.

I saw a report on the TV news years ago that said that we spend a good part of our days waiting in lines. From grocery lines to restaurant lines we spend alot of our time waiting each day. I think that An Alex Hughes book in your pocket or on your tablet is a good remedy for this. I enjoyed ”Sharp” and highly recommend it as a must-read and own.
