“Strangers” is the story of a British university professor Jonah Mulray, played by John Simm, whose life is completely upended when his wife is killed in a car accident in Hong Kong. She lived part time in Hong Kong and they would spend a good deal of time apart because of their jobs and Jonah´s fear of flying. He´s forced to fly to Hong Kong to identify his wife´s remains and what follows is the discovery of corruption and secrets that threaten the life of Jonah and his new found step daughter named Lau Chen, played by Katie Leung

“Strangers” or “White Dragon” is really good, sensible television. It avoids the exaggerations that most American action films and TV series fall victim to. You don´t have a hero who gets away with anything and everything and no stupid, choreographed fight scenes every ten minutes. Jonah is a sensible man with a life turned more complicated by no fault of his own. His new found step daughter Lau Chen is really your typical young adult going through the difficulty of losing her mother and finding out uncomfortable truths about her family. She seemed to find her common sense though and is a well written character.

This is a story about a ordinary people dealing with loss and uncomfortable truths. Things get ratcheted up a notch when those family secrets involve corruption at the highest levels of government and threats to the main character and his step daughter.

I have to say that what pulled me into this series wasn´t just the unravelling mystery or the fearsome, invisible threat. Although those were well done. It was the main character who was so much like your everyday person leading a life most can relate to. His intelligence and dogged curiosity are just amazing.

A TV series as good as “Strangers” or “White Dragon” hasn´t come out in a long time so I highly recommend it. It really is very good so check it out and enjoy.
