Super Size Me
released in 2004

“Supersize Me” is an independent, American documentary film produced, directed, staring and written by Morgan Spurlock. It stars Morgan Spurlock and Alexandra Jamieson. It was edited by Julie “Bob” Lombardi and was created with a very low budget. This is a significant achievement because of the costs of making movies. “Supersize Me” is a very informative documentary that was nominated for an Academy Award for a Documentary Feature and has impacted nations all around the world. This documentary is a masterpiece of our time and should be seen by everybody.

The idea of the documentary is simple, follow Morgan Spurlock for 30 days as he eats only McDonalds. Over the course of 30 days we are able to see the effects of his fast food diet. This includes weight gain, increase in blood pressure, mood swings and increase in cholesterol, to name a few side-effects. He also details the environmental effects of McDonalds on the environment. The amount of garbage produced by fast food chains each year is mind numbing.

This film tries successfully to explore the reasons for health issues related to diet and nutrition such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. “Supersize Me” is an honest look at the unrecognized costs of bad nutrition. We need to stop creating businesses that make a lot of money for a few people at the expense of the many and the environment.

There is one giant disclaimer that needs to be mentioned when discussing the problem of obesity around the world. There are many causes to obesity ranging from lifestyle, (that is to say diet and exercise) to biological to viral and more. So it is important to keep in mind that fast food is one of several causes for obesity. Fast food is not the only cause for obesity but it is a major, contributing factor.

I really enjoyed “Supersize Me” and highly recommend it as a fun-to-watch documentary for all ages. We really need to be informed about some of the facts Morgan Spurlock speaks of. So get yourself a copy or even better buy a bunch and hand them out as gifts.
