The hectic lifestyle is really nothing new to people. The fact that we can get results with a few taps of the keyboard is, however, new. We can get more done nowadays thanks to technology but having a list of things to do during the workday is not a new thing at all. In antiquity wealthy people had slaves to help them with their lives while we have the more efficient and moral technology to help us, and that technology is also incresingly accessible to way more people. The person of today is however very different from the person of yesterday. Technology has changed people just like living in a slave system changed people years ago. Living in a slave system produced a person different fromthe person today. What grabs our attenttion the most during the course of the day? What occupies our thoughts the most?
The second question seems the easiest to answer. I imagine that a person with health issues would be plagued, or reminded with pain, with their health issues. Whether it was cancer or some kind of auto-immune disorder, or anything serious, a sick person would have constant thoughts of their health issues. At least that is what I imagine. But for someone without health issues, I heard it said by many people who study these things that most worry about money. Most people’s thoughts dwell on money. From worrying and wishing for more to managing what they have. Conversations often slide toward the topic of money. Rarely do you overhear someone talk about their good health or the good health of those they love. When people have good health it seemsthattheytake it for granted. Like clean water, air and gravity. I really do believe that such obsessions prevent a person from enjoying their day. It might well be the most common of unhealthy obsessions and it is something we need to change.
Now, as far as the first question is concerned, it seems to be our screens. Yes, our screens from our phones, TVs, computers and all other things that drag us into the internet or our daily lists of work to be done. If you watch a group of ten people who are awake for ten seconds, any ten people, anywhere, 8 out of the 10 will cast their eyes to some screen. Whether it is a wall screen somewhere, their smart phones or computers, their eyes will be sucked into a screen. Is that normal? It has become like breathing to us and is like the morning cup of coffee that lasts the whole day. Our dependence to cars does not approach our dependence to screens. It might well be the biggest addiction in the developed part of the world with the rest of the world racing to catch up. And they will.
I see how the screens have changed our mentalities but I wonder where this new mentality will lead us? Toward wich types of solutions will we be drawn to and which types goals will we as a society strive toward?
I guess we´ll just have to wait and see.
