“The Lost City” is the story of romance, action, comedy writer Loretta Sage, played by Sandra Bullock, who is in the process of finishing her much anticipated book series about the fictional Dr. Angela Lovemore and her love interest Dash McMahon, played by Channing Tatum. The real life model for the book cover Alan Caprison, who is the face of Dash, seems to overshadow the popularity of Loretta and this causes problems at conventions and book signings. Things take an unusual turn when adventure finds both Loretta and Alan in the real world. Having based her stories on historical events and real archeological sites she falls into the machinations of a psychotic billionaire named Abigail Fairfax, played by Daniel Radcliffe, who seeks what he believes Loretta has found. Abigail thinks that Loretta found the location of a lost city in the mid Atlantic where a priceless necklace called the Crown of Fire can be found. So, as in true villain fashion he kidnaps the author and it’s Alan to the rescue.

This is what I would call a fun film where none of the characters can really take themselves seriously and the only one that does, Loretta, has a lot of self discovery to do. That self discovery happens as she spends more time with Alan and many of the stereotypes she has about him are shattered. He is a nice guy and what he cannot do so well he more than makes up for in aiding Loretta become a more whole person. He is a character that helps her to grow as a person and rediscover that the only treasure in life is really love. Something crazy Abigail will never understand. As the adventure unfolds Loretta and Alan face many life threatening situations and are even helped by a real adventure hero, the personal trainer and master fighter with all the skills and courage. This adventurer is played by Brad Pitt who does a wonderful job. The way he mows a path through the bad guys camp and adventure is just hilarious and quite frankly what we, the audience, expect of Brad Pitt’s character. He really deserves his own film where he can just mow through adventures like a hot knife through butter.

One of the great things about this film is the simplicity of the themes and messages of the story. Loretta does have a kind of arrogance to her but as we see her change we like her more and more. Equally, as we learn more and see more of Alan we like him more and more. What he does not possess as an action hero he more than makes up for as a descent human being. The two are really meant for each other, They compliment each other very well.

Another great thing about the film is the comical elements. Firstly, the trainer, Brad Pitt, was so perfect as the role of the capable and real adventure hero who could push things forward when all seemed lost for the two. It was kind of funny to see. Another funny moment was the extreme nature of the villain Abigail who was just bonkers as well as being bad. He was cowardly, corrupt, self centered and so many more of the qualities the best villains have. But above all he was comical in his scheming and in spite of his resources and machinations was never worthy of center stage in the story. At center stage of the story was the relationship between Loretta and Alan and that’s what kept this from being a mediocre film.

This is a fun movie with a lot of action, exotic locations, great story, romance and villain that is worth the watch. Sandra Bullock does a great job as Loretta. You can’t help but like her in spite of all her faults.

So check out “The Lost City”. It’s a guaranteed like.
