“The Mist” is an American, scif, horror film produced by Frank Darabont, Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer. It was directed by Frank Darabont and was based on the 1980 book of the same name by Stephen King. “The Mist” is the story of David Drayton, played by Thomas Jane, who goes through a terrible supernatural experience after a serious storm hits his New England town. The story starts  when David goes into town after the mysterious storm for supplies leaving his wife Stef Drayton, played by Kelly Collins Lintz, behind. He takes his son Billy Drayton, played by Nathan Gamble, to the store with him. He also takes his neighbor Brent Norton, played by Andre Braugher, who is combative from suffering years of racial injustice. What follows is a horror story where David must protect himself and his son from creatures that come out of a mist that has descended on his town and are not of this world. He is holed up in a grocery store with some of the townspeople who are all getting supplies before the storm gets worse. The store is surrounded by the mist and strange creatures are lurking around town preying on on the townspeople.

I really liked this movie for the story and the scifi-ness of it. It is a good example of the prisoner archetype in storytelling. Basically a group of people are stuck in a bad situation together without an idea of how to get out. Now throw in some strange and dangerous creatures and a mist that keeps everybody in like prison walls and you have a great story that will please the horror film lovers as well as sci-fi fans. In these situations we see human nature at its best and worst and this film is no exception. You get some people that can think more or less clearly while others that will scapegoat in an effort to control the group or live out their twisted view of the world.

“The Mist” is a dated but good film that is worth the watch. It has some good actors and will have you squeeze the arm of your couch every so often. The ending is also very good.
