“The Player” is an American, crime, thriller, grim look at the Hollywood machine and the people crawling around inside. It´s based on the book of the same name written by Michael Tolken who also wrote the screenplay. It was directed by Robert Altman and produced by David Brown, Michael Tolkin and Nick Wechsler. It stars Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Robbins, Greta Scacchi, Fred Ward, Peter Gallagher, Brian James, Cynthia Stevenson, Vincent D`Onofrio, Dean Stockwell, Richard E. Grant, Sydney Pollack, Lyle Lovett, Dina Merrill, Angela Hall, Leah Ayres and more.
“The Player” really is a look at the Hollywood machine and the people crawling around inside it through a critical lense. The story is of Hollywood executive, powerbroker Griffin Mill, played by Tim Robbins, who accidently commits a serious crime and how he covers it up while wrestling with the juggernaut that is Hollywood.
It`s a cold place full of overly ambitious, weaselly people who would do anything for influence and power. The best description of the story is to think of maggots squirming around in a box over a piece of meat. It´s what the rumors of Hollywood talk about in a tightly wrapped murder mystery and cover up. The people in this story are not likeable. They´re shallow, opportunistic, what I call a charicature of bad behavior. One thing this film does though is to keep you in your seat. I was intrigued at how the story was developing and I wondered how it would end.
“The Player” is a good watch that some call a period piece of Hollywood in the 90s. The story is intriguing and bothersome but it´s a well told story.
