”The Warded Man” also named ”The Painted Man” is a fantasy novel written by Peter V. Brett. It is the first novel in the Demon Cycle. The second book is called ”The Desert Spear” and was released in 2010. The third was released in 2013 and called ”The Daylight War”. The fourth was released in 2015 and called ”The Shull Throne”. Talks of a possible film with director Paul S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt are circulating the rumor mill too. It has been nominated for the David Gemmell legend award.

”The Warded Man” takes place in a medieval fantasy world where demons hunt people at night. They control the world at night and people can only repel them with wards. There are different types of demons that spring from the earth come sunset every night such as wood demons, wind demons, rock demons and fire demons.

The story follows three characters Arlen, Leesha and Rojer who together take a stand against the demons and teach people how to fight back. They have different abilities and different backgrounds. Arlen is a messenger at first, Leesha is a healer and Rojer is a jungleur.

This is an action packed tale with very good character development, an exciting battle in the end and startling revelations at the very end by Arlen and Leesha. The story is original and the characters are likeable. Arlen harkens back to the lone gunslinger archetype in the western genre who is fearless and very capable. I recommend this novel as a fun read.
