The Windup Girl – revisited
author Paolo Bacigalupi
One book I´d like to revisit is Paolo Bacigalupi´s book, “The Windup Girl”. This is an addendum to my Jan2014 post of “The Windup Girl”. I´ve read some of the blogs and seen some of the critics express their opinions on what was wrong with the book. Some say that the characters weren´t developed enough and that they rambled too much. Some have complained that it was too violent. All of these opinions are minor flaws with the exception of the violence Emiko suffers. “The Winup Girl” is my April 30th re-visit for 2015,
This is a good book and I do agree that the author has created a vividly dangerous world but the ramblings of the characters doesn´t bother me. Furthermore most of the characters, except Emiko, weren´t developed enough but that doesn´t keep it from being a good read. It only makes us want more story to read. At the end of the book I found myself hoping for a sequel.
Keep in mind that because their world is collapsing so quickly you cannot develop them in the same way as in most books. All of the characters are essentially scrambling for their lives. This story could have taken place on a sinking ship where all the characters are focused on surviving. In a crisis seconds can feel like minutes or hours and that is the feeling the author portrays brilliantly.
I have to say the book “The Windup Girl” was nothing less than fantastic. The ending is unpredictable and hopeful and the story takes you through a world in collapse were the characters are desperate and complex. It´s the type of book you´ll want to read again. I highly, highly recommend it.
