“Star Wars: Thrawn” is a comic book series published by Marvel Comics and written by Jody Houser, illustrated by Luke Ross. It is a limited comic book series that takes place between “Star Wars episode III: Revenge Of The Sith” and “Star Wars episode IV : A New Hope” and is an adaptation of the novel by Timothy Zahn. It details the life of Mitth`raw`nuruodo a.k.a Thrawn as he ascends the empire ranks of the Galactic Empire. This is a great story folks.

“Star Wars: Thrawn” is the story of Grand Admiral Thrawn from the time he is discovered on planet Chisss where he lives as an exiled warrior through his ascendency to Grand Admiral. He does not seem to be force sensitive although seeing how well the emperor hid his force sensitivity, who knows?

Thrawn has so many qualities that I really admire in a protagonist. He is strategic as a problem solver and intelligent but not vain or deluded. He is focused on whatever task is at hand without being being narrow minded or dismissive toward people. Although he does serve an evil organization, the most evil organization in the known galaxy, he is not sadistic and is motivated by a higher purpose which is the survival of his people. Characters motivated by higher purposes are often the most interesting and are easy to admire. I had to remind myself that he was an officer in the empire, (and not a knight in King Arthur´s Round Table for example), on several occasions because he held himself like a genuine hero.

Thrawn is a hero who solves problems with his sharp intellect. He is a very good problem solver and that is what makes this such a fun read. Technology, The Force, family name or any other power do not solve his problems. There are no such shortcuts for him. He solves his own problem in a way that reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes and I found that clever.

Mitth´raw´nuruodo is also a protagonist who navigated his hostile environment with a grace that is admirable. By hostile environment I mean the discrimination he had to deal with because of his blue skin. His blue skin highlighted the fact that he was from a planet on the outer rim and many of his peers did not want him to succeed. In spite of that he rose through the ranks quickly to become a Grand Admiral and win the Emperor Palpatine´s approval. I liked the way The Emperor called him by his real name and not his nickname, Thrawn, from the first time they met.

I always thought that Star Wars books and comics were for young adults and hence boring reads but that is not the case. This is a very well crafted story that will have mass appeal across all types of consumers young and old. The stories are well crafted.

Let me talk about this art form which I have never previously indulged in. I´m talking about the audio comic book form. This is a video where images of the comic book are streamed along with the comic book´s narration. It´s still images on top of narration and I have to say that it works. Some say that the comic book medium of storytelling is in decline because of the transition from paper to digital. There is also the talk that some of the comic books are geared toward a younger audience thus limiting there audience. I don´t know about all this but I do think that there is a place for audio comic books in the modern era. So, try it out and enjoy.

So check out this comic series. It´s worth it.
