“Undone” is an American, comedy, drama, adult animation, TV series on Amazon Prime created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, who also wrote it, and also written by Lauren Otero, Elijah Aron and Joanna Calo. It was directed by Hisko Hulsing and stars Rosa Salazar, Angelique Cabral, Constance Marie, Siddharth Dhananjay, Daveed Diggs, Bob Odenkirk, Luna-Marie Katich, Nova Reed, Sheila Vand, Kevin Bigley, Percy Daggs IV, Cameron Gayden, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Giorgie Luck Vasquez, Blue Chapman, John Corbett, Tyler Posey, Brad Hall, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Holley Fain, Suzanne Friedline, Nicholas Gonzalez and many others.
“Undone” is the story of Alma Winograd-Diaz, played by Rosa Salazar, and her struggles with mental illness while she tries to solve the mystery behind her father Jacob´s death, (played by Bob Odenkirk). Now this series is an adult animation with a good story, great script and, dare I say, well acted. My knowledge of mental illness is very limited so I found myself teetering back and forth between calling this a purely scifi series and mental illness through the eyes of the person afflicted. Alma is a rebelious woman with issues like the unsolved mystery of her father´s death. It´s a strange scene when he disappears from her life forever because they are out trick or treating when he gets a phone call and leaves her, as a child on the street. Yes, he abandons his child, on the street, on Halloween. Apparently, Jacob did many strange things for reasons explained later on. (I don´t want to give away any spoilers).
“Undone” is a very strange but good series. Even though I found myself reading blog comments about it to understand it better I found myself hoping it was really a scifi story for the sake of Rosa and Jacob. This is a journey into the schizophrenic mind where those afflicted find it difficult to distinguish between reality and their hallucinations. It is a very serious condition and we get to see how hard it is through the eyes of Rosa. We also get to see the strain it puts on the people that love her.
I also loved the writing. The script was fantastic and I feel that when dealing with adult animation that is crucial. It is so much harder to dazzle people with that style of animation than with reality or even other styles of animation.
I highly recommend “Undone”. It´s an interesting watch to say the least.
