Yes folks, “Valerian” is my April 30th revisit because I feel it did not get fair critique by the media, bloggers and others beholden to certain Hollywood giants. Please check out my first post of Valerian at this link.

“Valerian” is a French, sci-fi, action film taken after the French, sci-fi graphic novel series (also known as “Valerian: Agent Spatio-Temporel” or “Valerian et Laureline”) created by Pierre Christinand Jean-Claude Mezieres. It was directed by Luc Besson and written by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres. It stars a large cast of very talented people such as Dane Dehaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, Sam Spruell, Alain Chabat, Rutger Hauer, Peter Hudson, Xavier Giannoli, Louis Leterrier, Eric Rochant, Benoit Jacquot, Olivier Megaton, Sasha Luss, Elizabeth Debicki, Pauline Hoarau, Lee Delong, Diva Cam, Marie Barrouillet, Jean-FrancoisLenogue, Aurelien Gaya, Velvet D`Amour, Clair Tran, Mikael Buxton, Roman Blomme, Reginal Kudiwu, Eric Lampaert, Sand Van Roy, Robbie Rist, Paul Lefevre, Florian Guichard and Pauline Serreau. This is a fun and visually stunning film that is definitely worth your time. It was produced by Luc Besson and Virginie Besson-Silla. It´s also important to say that it is translated from French by Jerome Saincantin.

To recap from my first post: “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets” is the story of two agents on a seriously dangerous mission to retreive an important artifact/creature of alien origin. What starts out as a dangerous task of retrieval turns into a situation where the two agents right a wrong done on an alien species. But so much happens in between. There is the beautiful world building from the most creative minds of Jean-Claude Meziere and Pierre Christin and Luc Besson filled with the most exotic, alien creatures and the adventures, foibles and sexual tensions between the two main characters all rolled into a wonderful story with a wonderful main theme. The world building is a strange and exciting look at what alien life could look like and what our co-exisitence with those different forms of life might look like. And of course technology, so much technology of all kinds everywhere. From fancy spaceships to digital worlds layered on top of each other, Valerian (played by Dane Dehaan) and Laureline (played by Cara Delevingne)must navigate them all to fuflfill their misson.

I can´t say enough how good the movie is and how much ahead of its time it was when it was written. It´s a beautiful film that´s action packed, funny, innovative with a wonderful story development and flow. You can tell that a lot of talented people worked on this project. Their hard work and skill made Valerian into the great movie that it is.

The ideas in the story of Valerian are still novel today. Think of the virtual market, the station that accumulates so much life and the idea of alien life co-existing. The graphic novel series goes into further detail, of course, so you want to read all the graphic novels but the fact is that the film “Valerian” does such a good job with bringing the story to life. I really can´t think of anybody that would have done a better job with it than Luc Besson and Virginie Besson-Silla.

So I highly recommend “Valerian” and read the graphic novel because that is just so fantastic too.
