What About Cult Films?

What about cult films and the cult film audience? many movies achieve cult film status and it never seems to get the attention of mainstream entertainment, influencers (most influencers) and the like. Why is that? There are many examples of cult films like “Napoleon Dynamite”, “Erasurehead”, “Fight Club”, “Donnie Darko”, “Scarface”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Blade Runner”, “12 Monkeys”, “The Elephant Man”, “Night Of The Living Dead”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “Dark City”, “The Time Masters” are just a few of examples of very good cult films. So many cult films are such a good watch you could almost open at least one theater in every city that shows only cult films and I think it would soon become a city landmark, on tourists websites and all. BTW, those exist but we need more.

Anyway, are cult films so much under the radar? I recently saw a film I am sure will be a cult classic and is so worth the watch. The costumes, make up, cast were just amazing. And of course the themes and underlying topics were fantastic. It was funny too. It was shocking and funny, at parts shocking, at other times funny with extreme, gratuitous gore that was hard to take seriously, and so it was comical, and it worked. The film is a 2024 release called “The Substance”. I highly recommend it.

So, why aren’t cult films more advertised?

They deserve more talk, buzz from the medias and mouths. But what makes a cult film? It’s hard to pin down what makes a good cult film. A cult film should tap into the vein of a segment of cultural that, it should resonate with people. It helps that the world of the cult classic is a strange, quirky one and this reflects in the characters. It can be scarry or shocking or just out of the ordinary. Good examples of quirky strange characters are seen in the films “Erasurehead” and “Napoleon Dynamite”. A good example of strange worlds are seen in the films “Dark City” and “Blade Runner”. These films show strange worlds that we the viewer must understand as well as the protagonist. With the film “Scarface” we see that gangster films can also become cult classics. It is not only the scifi genre that cult films are born from. You can find cult films in all genres.

This opinion of mine is a kind of homage to the classic cult films out there. They are definitely films that deserve a bigger audience. Or maybe they just need a more vocal audience because everyone knows about them and word of a new cult film spreads quickly by word of mouth and the digital means.
