“Wolfs” is an American, action, comedy film produced by Michael Beugg, George Clooney, Dede Gardner, Grant Heslov, Jeremy Kleiner, Dianne McGunigle, Brad Pitt, Jon Watts and Kathleen Gardner. It was written and directed by Jon Watts. It stars Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Donut McGunigle, Sergio Cota Jr., Poorna Jagannathan, Alfred Chou, Robert Timothy Smith, Amanda Aday, Kymbali Craig, Linda Carola, Zlatko Buric, Vladimir Sizov, Abby Mohaddes, Sasha Biktagir, Sammy Horowitz, Frank Trigg, Duffy Gaver, Edwin Taylor, Panuvat Anthony Nanakornpanom, Richard Kind, Irina Dubova, Frances McDormand, Wael Alroyly, Halasius Bradford, Michael Dukakis, Rob Riddell, Hassani Rizzo, David Sargsyan and Nandi Sharma.
“Wolfs” is the story of ‘cleaner’, played by George Clooney, who is sent on a job to clean the body of a man presumed to be dead in a hotel room. There are many names for the line of shady work where people hide deaths, murders and the like, some call it being a ‘cleaner’, a ‘fixer’ and I’ve even heard it called a ‘mechanic’. Yes, a mechanic and I’m sure there are many other names for this kind of work. When rich and powerful people end up in an unexpected mess, like in this case where District Attorney Margaret, played by Amy Ryan, has a the dead body of a boy she picked up for sex in your hotel room, then she calls her fixer to make it go away. The character of George Clooney is such a man. But the unexpected happens when the fixer played by Brad Pitt shows up for the same job. So, you have two lone wolves who must work together on this job. Things are complicated further when the boy who is supposed to be dead wakes up from his near fatal overdose. Things continue to get complicated for both fixers and their only way out is to work together on this messy job.
This is the funny and unsavory story of two professional cleaners who are lone wolves, which should have been the title of the film, who are forced to work together and who end up making a pretty good duo. A cleaner duo. There is that tension from the highly competitive business I imagine theirs must be but there is also the strange loneliness that creates a strange acceptance for the two to work together. There is necessity for cooperation for sure but there is also an unacknowledged, possibly future friendship between the two. Needless to say, I loved the dynamic between the two cleaners. It works well.
This story has several hooks that keep the viewer fixed to their seats. One is the background of the two employers. There is a connection between the two women who hired both cleaners individually and we, the viewer, want to know what that connection is. We also want to know how the cleaners are going to extricate themselves from their dangerous predicaments. They are in a real pickle with danger coming from many places.
“Wolfs” is a low key kind of action movie where the protagonists are really navigating a maze of danger and keeping their heads down as best they can. Theirs is a world where people keep their heads down and avoid any kind of fuss but that is especially true in this case. But it’s more than that. The character of George Clooney is an introvert who would want any kind of attention even if he were in another profession.
Now let’s clear the elephant in the room. This is a light hearted comedy on a very, very sleazy business, if you can even call it that. A more appropriate term would be criminal enterprise. As charming is both “cleaners” are, they are criminals in the criminal underworld. Sure, they don’t directly kill or hurt people but they do evade the law and protect people who have seriously broken the law. So the film is in some ways a huge suspension of disbelief. And it works here because we focus on both cleaners and their troubles. And, because of that we like them… and even root for them. Now, that’s kind of brilliant of the writers. Isn’t it?
This is a funny, action film that is a pleasure to watch, especially if you’re a George Clooney or Brad Pitt fan. The two seem to work well together and I even heard that they are friends in real life. So, this movie is like a hang out for them.
