“Mercy” is the story of detective Chris Raven, played by Chris Pratt, who is wrongly accused of murder. He is held in a chair in front of a screen and judged by Judge Maddox, played by Rebecca Ferguson. This story takes place in a not-too-distant future Los Angeles with worsening crime. In this dystopian future AI is used as a tool against worsening crime and this poses many problems. At first, Chris is a strong supporter of this new system. He is a strong supporter up until he is wrongly accused of the murder of his wife. Lucky for him he has an inside knowledge of the criminal justice system and so he is the best person to fight his case and prove his innocence. No matter what their stats say I have to think that a system like this one is too flawed and would produce many wrongly accused people who are crushed by the criminal justice system. This is a scarry future. Chris is an innocent man fighting for his life.

The themes of this film are classic scifi themes. Take the individual against the ginormous technological system for starters. This is such a powerful theme today with cases all over the internet and media about a wrongfully accused person fighting for their lives against the criminal justice system or even corporate bureaucracies. We the viewer see that detective Chris in innocent and the people in his life have, at the very least, strong suspicions that he is innocent but the criminal justice system churns on. It follows its algorithms with the excuse that it’s only doing what it was programmed to do and implying it is without flaw. We of course know that the system is very flawed and that detective Chris along with other people are the victims of technology corruption and technology misuse.

Stories where an innocent person is being grinded down are some of the most tear jerking ones. When we the viewer know that a person is innocent but the system will not let them go, usually for corrupt reasons, this is a powerful fear each and every one of us hold inside. It can happen to anybody. It happens to people across all social ranks, social casts and can even happen to the wealthy and privileged. That is why it is a universal theme. My heart goes out to all the wrongfully and falsely accused who suffer the weight and consequences of punishments when they are innocent. It is just so sad.

Another interesting idea is one where the criminal justice system in this film is honestly not a finished one. It is not fully tested and there are many issues that have not been dealt. The result is the flawed system they laud as technological advancement and societal improvement when it is not. We send years testing new drugs before they come to market and we should do the same with such technologies. In my opinion this technology is not fully tested and therefore does not have adequate safeguards where qualified people can step in and keep things from going wonky.

This is a movie for the age of emerging AI. What technology can do in this film is amazing and fast. Everything happens with such speed and relies so much on surveillance it’s scarry. I still feel sorry for any innocent person caught up in this system. Especially, if they do not have experience with the criminal justice system like being a detective or such.

Check out this film and if you are part of a team designing such a system. Please be thorough and spend your time doing so. Think of drug developers who spend years testing and fixing problems with new drugs. That system works and it’s needed.

So, check out “Mercy” it’s what scifi does best.
