“Project Hail Mary” is the story of molecular biologist and high school teacher Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who is sent far out into space to ‘heal’ a very, very serious environmental problem. Ryland is the sole survivor on a mission to the Tau Ceti System to investigate a phenomenon that is the possible antidote to an affliction known as ‘astrophage’ that is spreading through the galaxy and eating the stars. The astrophage is like an infection on the body that is the universe, our universe. While on his mission they discover an alien craft. They learn that the alien is on an identical mission that is identical to theirs. Naturally, in the spirit of an Andy Weir story they two creatures, that is Ryan and the alien (who is affectionately named Rocky), become friends and work together.

Let me start by mentioning that the title is part of American culture. In American football a ‘Hail Mary pass’ is a kind of last ditch effort where the quarterback throws the ball to a receiver who just holds his hands out while he’s running. This play takes skill and luck to succeed and when it does succeed the crowd goes crazy. I’m sure most Europeans and people from around the world might not understand that cultural nuance. The mission that Ryan is on is a Hail Mary play for the human race.

One element I noticed with the storytelling of Andy Weir which I liked very much besides his humor was how he used present day technology, with all its limitations in his story. He does not try to dazzle us with fancy technology we wish we had or drag the story down with a data dump of explaining a new science. I feel that that pulls us closer to the story and the people in the story. I really like that about Andy Weir stories. He did a similar thing in his book “The “Martian”.

Also, one very successful story element that works very well, especially in this story, is the use of character cooperation in the solving of an galacto-environmental threat. (That;s not a word but you know what I mean.).I loved the idea of bringing the importance of solving environmental issues into the Scifi genre. We need to make more of those kinds of films and stories.

Check out the film “Project Hail Mary” because it really is a gem for all ages with some of the best themes in stories today.
