*A Correction*

How often do journalists, bloggers and writers publish a correction to their material or information given by people and entities to correct a mistake made? I am not a journalist because I do mostly superficial dives into topics and I don’t write or do anything hateful, unfairly critical or just ignorant on the stories I look into. I also stay away from anything that is deceiving or when someone wants to get street cred but tearing a higher-up down. And I definitely stay away from slander. I do not like slander no matter who is the victim of it. So, I’m writing this to correct a misleading documentary I wrote about a few years ago. That documentary is called “Supersize Me” by the late dubious Morgan Spurlock.

And the link to that post is at Supersize Me – Ink2Quill.

The problem, pure and simple, is that the documentary was not straightforward with its method of ‘revealing the truth to us’ about a big food chain. The documentary was marketed as journalism that exposed the dangers of fast foods and the larger portions they try to get people to eat.

Now it is true that fast food is not the ideal and nutritious food we should be eating every day, day after day, heaping portion after heaping portion, but the dishonesty in Morgan Spurlock’s story is that he was describing the symptoms of his own severe alcoholism and blamed fast food as the cause. And that was a lie. That is extreme dishonesty that I would even call criminal.

Apparently, Morgan Spurlock was a severe alcoholic whose problem drinking days go back at least to his college years where he was forced to leave his college due to his bad behavior. He confirmed this in interviews, and to his credit, he tried to set things right in later years. That is very good on his part to finally come clean. A correction is in order and since I just found out about this my correction is happening now.

Now, don’t get me wrong, here in America we have terrible health issues like obesity and bad food providers who encourage overconsumption of bad food. And that is a leading cause of major health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and so forth. But all of the facts and bad business practices by fast food industry does not wipe away the bad behavior of bad journalism and phony documentaries. Even if he put a tiny barely readable on his DVD label stating that this fake documentary was purely for entertainment that still does not cut it. BTW, he did not do this. When this fake documentary came out it had a huge impact on people. When I first saw it I remember being outraged to see someone suffer while eating fast food for 30 days because I know that there are some people who are raised on fast food and it’s basically what they can afford and all they know. Those people can suffer serious health issues years down the road and that is heart breaking.

So, this is a call to all people and writers and content makers to practice your craft with integrity and not lie or practice deception to tear someone or big companies down, to get clicks, to get likes or ad deals. Trying to pass misleading articles, videos and blogs as the truth is dirty and unfortunately it happens too often.

This is another cautionary tale to be very careful what you are told as truth and what you see on paper or the screen. I made the mistake of instantly believing it and I will have to be more cautious next time.

I’m just saying that this needs to be said. Take care.
