“The Green Hills Of Earth” is a scifi short story written by the scifi great, Robert A. Heinlein. I have to admit that I really need more Robert A. Heinlein on my website. His well known works include “Stranger In A Strange Land”, “Time Enough For Love” and “Starship Troopers”. I highly recommend all of these because they are really the cream of the crop of the Scifi genre. They are classic examples of R. Heinlein’s wit and wisdom concerning love, relationships and what’s most important in this life we live that is full of distractions. “The Green Hills Of Earth” is typical Heinlein but I would not call it his best because, in my opinion it tries a little too hard. It is worth reading nonetheless.

“The Green Hills Of Earth” is the story of a blind poet, singer, songwriter who goes by the name ‘Noisy Rhysling’. Rhysling is a man with plenty of time on his hands because he has no commitments ands so sets about traveling the galaxy. The wicker of his life is running down and he decides to write a final song. HIs final song is named ‘The Green Hills Of Earth’ and he manages to finish it before he passes on.

This is a short, too short, tale of a space wanderer that deserved its own series. I’m sure Rhysling has boat loads of stories of his adventures and misdeeds. One thing about the story is something I’ve seen in other novels and stories. And that is when I get the impression that the author was excited to start his/ her story but lost that motivation somehow and so they finished it quickly. On the other end of the spectrum you have great authors like Charles Dickens who when he wrote the classic “A Tale Of Two Cities” had his motivation from the first page to the last. And Alexandre Dumas who loved writing his classics like “The Count Of Monte Cristo” and you can tell. I highly recommend reading the classic.

I’m not saying that “The Green Hills Of Earth” are not worth the read. On the contrary, it’s a change of pace that will leave you tickled at the poet’s song.
